This week’s SpotLight includes events in Downtown Denver, Boulder, Castle Rock, Aurora, Parker, Morrison, Five Points, LoDo and Sun Valley, not to mention our Open Houses!


1-DowntownSpotLight Downtown Denver
Friday, 5/22 through Monday, 5/25
Denver Comic Con at the Colorado Convention Center; Downtown Denver Arts Festival at Sculpture Park; ArtStir at the Denver Pavilions; and Denver Day of Rock on the 16th Street Mall. Denver will be abuzz with activity this holiday weekend with four huge and fantastic events. Denver Comic Con kicks off with Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening, and continues through Monday with hundreds panels, workshops, exhibitors and guests from a host of popular arts including comic books, board and video games, anime, cosplay sci-fi, movies, television and literature. Downtown Denver Arts Festival celebrates its 17th year as a fine arts and crafts festival showcasing a select group of Colorado and national artists. It runs Friday afternoon through Sunday. ArtStir takes place Saturday and Sunday and features more than 140 local and regional artists showcasing a variety of works in painting, photography, illustration, textiles, furnishings, and mixed media. Finally, Denver Day of Rock happens Saturday afternoon and evening and offers free shows from great local and national acts. The shows, featuring such artists as Mat Kearney and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, happen on stages spread along 16th Street Mall.

2-BoulderSpotLight Boulder
Friday, 5/22 through Monday, 5/25

Boulder Creek Festival (9th to 14th Streets between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue) and the Bolder Boulder (from 30th and Walnut to CU’s Folsom Field). Memorial Day weekend is always packed with fun options for Boulderites and visitors alike. The Boulder Creek Festival—which kicks off with a concert Friday evening and continues through Monday—includes a program dedicated to remembering fallen heroes, features dozens of food and vendor booths and live music throughout the weekend, and concludes with the über-popular rubber ducky race Monday afternoon. The Bolder Boulder, an iconic 10K that celebrates its 36th anniversary this year, leads walkers and runners through the streets and neighborhoods of Boulder. Along the way, they enjoy live bands, food, costumes, plenty of cheering and fun distractions, and end the race with a lap around Folsom Field and the world’s largest Memorial Day celebration.

SpotLight Castle Rock
Saturday, 5/23, 8am
Memorial Day Run & March at Douglas County Fairgrounds. United Launch Alliance is proud to present the inaugural Memorial Day Run & March. The purpose of the March is to bring the community together to support our men and women in uniform while gathering dry goods and raising funds to provide to our local homeless veterans. The 5K/10K run is your opportunity to participate in a family-friendly fun run, or you can join in on the 30K march alongside uniformed military participating in a ruck march competition. All proceeds benefit local homeless veterans in Colorado.

Colorado Freedom Memorial dedicationSpotLight Aurora

Colorado Remembers: A Memorial Day Celebration at Colorado Freedom Memorial. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and presents a chance to say thank you—in a big way—to the surviving veterans of the war. Visit the Colorado Freedom Memorial for special events throughout the day including military re-enactments, a Colorado Freedom Memorial 2nd Anniversary ceremony, and a sunset concert from The Denver Brass, Sounds of the Rockies Men’s Chorus, and USAF Honor Guard.

Family Film Night: The Little Mermaid at The Liniger Building at CU South Denver. Don’t miss this opportunity to see The Little Mermaid on the big screen before it goes back into the Disney vault on May 31! Journey under the sea and join Ariel and her friends for a special screening of the animated classic. Come early for mermaid-themed activities and games and have your photo taken with a live mermaid!

Kick-Off of the 2015 Film on the Rocks Season at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Every year, Film on the Rocks proves to be a Colorado favorite as the series brings together classic films, local bands and comedians in a one-of-a-kind show at one of the most gorgeous venues in the world. The 2015 season kicks off Saturday night with a screening of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. Before the movie starts at dusk, Denver bands Strawberry Runners and Plume Varia, and comedian Elliot Woolsey, will entertain the crowd.

Crush City at The Savoy at Curtis Park. Top Denver comedians Jordan Doll and Aaron Urist bring more laughs to the already-thriving Denver comedy scene in the form of this new monthly showcase. This inaugural show will feature local “crushers” Bobby Crane, Janae Burris, Anthony Crawford, Hippieman, and Andrew Orvedahl—who, along with his troupe-mates in The Grawlix, recently had a sitcom picked up by TruTV and will spend the summer in LA filming. Come check out the city’s top talent and say you “knew them when.”

Sunday, 5/24, 10am – 2pm
Stars & Stripes: The Ultimate Memorial Day Party at Viewhouse Ballpark. Bust out your red, white & blue to celebrate all things America with music, drinks, food and fun at this Sunday Funday celebration. The Viewhouse will be serving their brunch menu from 10am – 3pm with bottomless bloody marys and mimosas. There will be DJs performing in the courtyard all day, volleyball tournaments, corn hole, giant beer pong, a dunk tank and plenty of other games, contests and giveaways. The first 100 guests will even receive a free Memorial Day-themed t-shirt or tank!

Denver Outlaws vs. Chesapeake Bayhawks and World Burrito Eating Championship at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Brave the chilly weather and come support Colorado’s outdoor lacrosse team! Enjoy the game, and stick around for the World Burrito Eating Championship, featuring celebrity eater Joey Chestnut attempting to take down 10 pounds worth of Illegal Pete’s burritos. The night will conclude with post-game fireworks.
